Introduction:

  • The Downstream Strategy & Planning Engineer is a key contributor to the development and evaluation of SAO's Downstream Investment Plan and Strategy. This role involves rigorous quantitative analysis of potential investment opportunities, with a focus on refining, petrochemicals, and integrated assets, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives and sustainability goals. The Engineer will collaborate with various business units and stakeholders to establish investment criteria and provide expert guidance on strategic options, tradeoffs, and implementation plans.

Responsibilities:

  • Techno-Economic Analysis: Conduct in-depth techno-economic evaluations of various Downstream investment opportunities, assessing their strategic fit, economic viability, and integration potential with the broader hydrocarbon value chain.
  • Sustainability Assessment: Analyze the environmental and social impacts of potential investments, focusing on emissions reduction, carbon footprint optimization, and alignment with SAO's sustainability goals.
  • Investment Criteria Development: Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to establish and maintain robust investment analysis criteria that reflect current market conditions and strategic priorities.
  • Strategic Execution: Provide expert commercial and technical advice on downstream strategy implementation, including evaluating strategic options, identifying tradeoffs, and developing actionable plans.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or a related field. An MBA or relevant advanced degree is strongly preferred.
  • 15+ years of experience in operations, technology, and business development within the downstream sector.
  • Proven track record of economic and commercial evaluations for refining, petrochemicals, and other downstream opportunities.
  • Strong understanding of asset modeling and optimization tools (e.g., PIMS, Petroplan) and industry data sources (e.g., IHS, WoodMac, Rystad).
  • Knowledge of key refining and chemicals processes, including recent sustainability advancements.
  • Deep understanding of global energy markets and trends.
  • Strong external perspective and professional network.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Experience in international and multicultural environments is preferred.
