Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC): opportunities for regional growth and development in 2021

Alternate text

The current EEC megaprojects will create employment for more than 100,000 people and increase income within the first five years. This growth will be ignited by the high-speed train project linking three airports: U-Tapao, Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

With the expansion of the terminal, taxiways and runways, passengers at Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi are projected to steadily increase from 2021. Mass transit lines in Greater Bangkok are also under construction and will create new opportunities in the construction sectors. The government plan is to stop the city's inner growth by promoting growth and development in the provinces, creating more jobs linking the city airports and transit links with surrounding provinces including Pattaya and Rayong.

The government currently set seven directives for each area to develop a smart city: smart environment, smart government, smart mobility, smart energy, smart economy, smart living and smart people.

For the last six months, Gemini Thailand has been looking into ways to support local government agencies with logistical manpower and we are currently building a close partnership with the Eastern-Seaboard Board of Investment Agency.

Foreigners entering Thailand - an update

With the announcements about several vaccine candidate trials, either being completed or at the end of their Phase 3 testings and the applications to government bodies for ‘emergency approval’, we now have to face the next question: will Thailand allow people to enter Thailand without first having the Covid-19 vaccine?

Given the Thai Government’s low-risk strategy, well almost zero-risk strategy, and reluctance to take any chances with the second wave of Covid 19, it is highly likely there will be a stipulation that anyone entering Thailand will need a vaccine certificate or stamp in their passports.

Couple this with the Thai population’s continued fear of allowing foreigners back into the country at this time, in poll after poll, and it’s a safe bet there will be a “no vaccine, no entry” restriction imposed. On a positive note, the Thai government may drop the 14-day quarantine for people that have had the vaccine (but not in the early days).

However, at this stage, nobody is sure how the vaccine will be rolled out in Thailand. The Thai government has already signed up for several of the leading vaccine candidates and will most likely provide the vaccine for free to citizens under its public health system.

So what does that mean for foreigners travelling to Thailand, living or working here? If you are covered, surely insurers will want its customers to be vaccinated. Sick customers cost them money. The question is, will insurance renewals be limited to only people who have been vaccinated? Will visas be issued or renewed only if you have been vaccinated as well?

As of yet, only foreigners holding a valid visa and foreign nationals travelling to Thailand with the intention to stay long term as a tourist, can apply for a Certificate of Entry with their local Thai embassy.
