SALARY OVERVIEW

Dear Friends of Gemini,
Welcome to the Gemini Personnel newsletter for the third quarter of 2020, I hope the past few months have started to bring a sense of optimism following the challenging start to the year.
At Gemini, a lot has been happening over the past three months as our offices in China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand have all fully reopened and resumed normal operations and we have been working closely with our clients to support them on their own recoveries.
Many of our clients are now beginning the process of hiring again, and are now faced with a new challenge – the large number of candidates who are in the market for new opportunities. This is where our teams of Consultants have been able to play a significant role in helping businesses to navigate through the increased volume in applicants and find the right talent for their needs.
Other parts of our business have also seen increased demand, most notably for HR Consulting services, where companies are increasingly looking for expert advice on how to handle issues such as remote working, virtual onboarding and employee reassignments. Gemini's outplacement programmes, which support employees who have been made redundant or terminated preparing for and managing their job search, continue to be in high demand across the region.
Finally, as previewed in our newsletter last May, we are delighted to announce the launch of our latest project Interim.works, a platform for Interim Managers and businesses to connect and find opportunities for collaboration on interim assignments.
I hope you enjoy reading this newsletter, and as always do not hesitate to contact us if we can help you or your business at this time!
Barry Kirkwood General Manager, China
Chinese consumers continue to spend,
offering opportunities for international brands
The first half of 2020 has been a time of unprecedented uncertainty and dismay, and for many around the world, it is still difficult for them to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
For China, the first country to be affected by Covid-19, and the first to emerge on the other side of the crisis, the feeling is somewhat different with a lot of optimism for the future which has been reflected in the growth of consumer spending in China, especially online.
To help kick-start the economic recovery, the government in China supported an 18-day long shopping festival ‘618’ in June, which resulted in gross merchandise volume (GMV) figures of over RMB 1 trillion (US$140 billion) being recorded on China’s e-commerce platforms during the two and half week festival.
Some of the largest categories for growth in this sales boom have been in food (especially fresh food), along with kitchenware and utensils, as people have adapted quickly to spending more time at home. This has created a number of opportunities for international brands to either enter the market or to increase existing in-China sales exponentially.
The rise of live-streaming and KOLs To help brands to promote their products and attract customers who are making their purchasing decisions increasingly online, 2020 has also seen a huge rise in the number of live streams hosted by KOLs (Key Opinion Leaders) on mobile apps in China. KOLs are increasingly being utilised by brands in order to communicate directly to consumers and to build trust in a product before a consumer makes a purchasing decision.
Gemini’s FMCG team has seen an increased need from our clients for talent who are able to operate in this digital marketplace with roles such as Livestreaming Director, Online Community Managers, and KOL Managers being in demand right now. Formore information about current trends in this market, and finding the right talent for your company to grow, please contact us.
More opportunities for families to return to Shanghai
Covid-19 has impacted businesses around the world since the start of 2020, and in China despite the relative return to normality as the number of daily cases is at now minimal levels, the disruption for many expatriates and their families continues.
It was on the evening of the 26th March that the Chinese government announced a temporary suspension of entry for foreigners with visas into China, which would come into force at 12:00am midnight on the 28th March, leaving foreigners who were currently outside of China just over 24 hours to jump on a flight back to the Middle Kingdom.
For most of those expats who were unable to return before this deadline, their exile from China has continued, with a number of stories of families being separated since the 28th March, with one partner inside China working, whilst their family remains outside waiting to return. Since early June, Chinese Embassies across the world have begun to re-open and have started accepting special applications for executive-level and business-critical expat staff to return.
At Gemini, we have been able to successfully support companies and their expat staff to apply for an Invitation Letter to allow them to return to China to engage in economic, trade, scientific or technological activities.
Shanghai now considering applications from families hoping to return from overseas In a further promising sign, the Shanghai government has just announced that they will consider applications from families who have been separated since the 28th March. This is a change in policy in response to the request from a number of families who are desperate to reunite with those who have remained working here in China since the lockdown.
For more information about applications to return to Shanghai or other parts of China, please contact our China Visa Manager, Lily Zhang by email lilyz@i-five.com.cn who can advise on the procedure and next steps.
