Thailand's economical outlook for expanding employment in 2021

So far, Thailand has performed relatively well compared to its peers in the region in terms of the scale, speed, and targeting of its fiscal response, which has centred on a THB1 trillion package to fund cash transfers, the medical response, and economic and social rehabilitation. New large-scale cash transfer programs have been established to support vulnerable groups who would not otherwise have been covered by existing social assistance mechanisms.

So with light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel, it is predicted companies will start to express plans to recruit an additional 19% of new staff in 2021. Salary increases in industries such as High Tech, Automotive, Manufacturing and Transportation Equipment were above the overall average due in part to the nature of their industry. The High Tech industry saw increased demand as a result of remote working, while the Automotive industry’s strong labour union kept salary increments stable, whereas the Consumer Goods industry, which is among the hardest hit due to a slump in household spending, could saw the smallest increment at 2.5%. While companies initially project a 5% overall increase in salaries for 2021 for the first half of this year, a more modest reflection would be around 3% across salary scales.

Most businesses are yet to recover to their pre-COVID levels, but there are also businesses that have grown during the pandemic. They include Digital and related businesses such as E-Commerce, Delivery and Packaging services, IT Solutions, Cyber-security Services, Healthcare and Hygiene Products, and Insurance. Relocation of production capacity from China to ASEAN, especially to Vietnam and Thailand continues as firms diversify their risks out of China. Automotive and Electronics industries are, for example, relocating production for markets outside of China to Thailand. Businesses that are related to public sector investments and activities will continue to grow this year as public spending expands.
