China Over 50% of China's retail sales to showrooms online in 2021 China has been leading the online retail trends for several years now, and this year consumers are predicted to cross a significant threshold this year. According to Fast Company, China is set to become first country in the world where more than half of all retail sales will be made online this year, as opposed to physical retail stores.
Aided by the restrictions in place due to Covid-19 in 2020, Chinese consumers purchased 44.8% of goods online. No other country comes remotely close to matching this predicted online sales growth this year, with other major economies such as the UK (28.3% of sales made online), USA (15%) and France (11.2%) a long way behind.
Many foreign brands have been very successful in adapting to this switch away from brick-and-mortar retail sales and onto the online domain which has led to a growth in roles in Digital Marketing, Live streaming video content, and E-Commerce.
International brands who sell their products on China’s Tmall store are investing an increasing proportion of their sales and marketing budget into building Digital Marketing and E-Commerce teams to enable them to reach their target audiences.
For brands with physical retail stores in China, they are increasingly being seen as showrooms where products can be tried and modeled in-store, with purchases subsequently made online.
If you are looking to sell your products to consumers in China, then it is essential for brands to consider the type of sales and marketing teams they will need to brands need to consider their potential sales.
