Dear Friends of Gemini,

It is very encouraging that Hong Kong has had a very low number of virus cases with few fatalities. Nevertheless we are all looking forward to seeing the restrictions lifted progressively and a return to normal (whatever that is).

On the positive side many people have now taken the opportunity to update their resumes and seek new employment opportunities. So we have plenty of excellent candidates in almost every industry! Please contact your Gemini consultant for help. Virtual interviews can be arranged if required.

Gemini’s Human Resources Consulting Division has also been very busy.  Apart from outplacement counseling offered to companies shedding staff Gemini also covers training and coaching, psychometric and skills assessment, salary and benefits assessments and many other useful services.

Looking around the region, at the time of writing, Singapore and Thailand remain in heavy lock-down but China is becoming very active again. All of the Gemini offices are functioning and  China and Hong Kong are open and fully staffed.

Gemini will be launching an exciting new product in the interim management space soon – watch out for details!

Talent demands in times of corona

Many breathed a sigh of relief when the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) released data showing the coronavirus infection figures were declining, and the government announced a 45-billion-baht budget aimed at helping the unemployed find new employment.

Although the Kingdom's unemployment rate is on the rise due to the negative impacts of COVID-19, the current situation also leads to an increasing demand of talent in the following specialisations:

IT
As companies increase remote work policies and flexible workforce arrangements, IT systems and support will be needed. The sudden increase in online activity can have big implications on system stability, network robustness and data security, especially in parts of the country where telecom and systems infrastructure are not as well developed. Companies will need to act quickly to ensure they have the systems, and support staff, in place to ensure smooth operation as the workplace and workforce evolve.

Financial
Companies should immediately develop a treasury plan for cash management. A focus on collections and reducing aged Accounts Receivable should be an immediate priority. Extending payables where possible to conserve cash will be also important. This emphasizes the importance of cash flow management for all businesses during this volatile time.

Supply Chain and Sourcing Management
Identifying the company's key direct suppliers and understanding their ability to meet supply requirements and potential risks is the main priority now. Supply Chain departments should ensure they create transparency in their Tier 1 supplier inventory, production, and purchase order fulfillment status. Finally, they should be working with key suppliers to understand the flexibility that they have to shift production and purchase order fulfillment to other locations.
Also, for companies that have multi-sourced key inputs, it is important to move quickly to activate secondary supplier relationships and secure additional critical inventory and capacity.

Smart Manufacturing

Thailand has also a strong Manufacturing industry, making it a prime target for technology such as automation and robotics. With such technology promising greater production efficiency at lower costs, more and more firms are beginning to integrate them into their production lines, which leads to a demand for skilled workers that can manage industrial robots and automated systems.

How companies in Thailand are dealing with staffing issues during COVID-19

Gemini Personnel Recruitment Thailand has collected some examples from our clients and connections on how they have been managing their staff and financial situation over the past few months as a result of COVID-19.

Redundancies
It is estimated that the current situation will result into 4.2 million retail and shopping mall workers, 1 million construction workers, 978,000 hotel workers, 250,000 restaurant workers, 200,000 spa and massage workers, and 200,000 garment factory workers losing their jobs. Most of these layoffs will affect low-paid workers, with 6 million out of the 7 million workers losing their jobs earning less than 20,000 baht a month. However, on the upside, businesses that have been able to implement policies for employees “working from home“ are still trying operate as usual.

A lot of these job losses are a result of the tragic drop in tourism, with foreign arrival numbers plunging 42.8% in February, and 74.6% in March. With the Kingdom's tourism industry being a 14% contributor to the Thai economy, the Tourism Authority of Thailand believes the impact of these numbers will be significant.

Other cost-saving measures

Next to redundancies, companies have also announced the implementation of other cost-saving measures. For example, many employers have cancelled or deferred bonuses, and withdrawn allowances until later in the year, pending company performance. Another development is companies offering more and more temporary employment contracts rather than permanent employment contracts, to be able to maintain flexibility in their workforce.
