Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) Development Plan

The Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) Development Plan, as part of of Thailand 4.0, is aiming to revitalise and enhance the well-known Eastern Seaboard Development Programme that supported the Eastern Seaboard region as a powerhouse for industrial production in Thailand for over 30 years.

Under this initiative, the Eastern Economic Corridor Office of Thailand (the EECO) has been assigned to drive the country’s investment in uplifting innovation and advanced technology for the future generation. The EEC Development Plan will lead a significant development and transformation of Thailand’s investment in physical and social infrastructure in the area. The EEC project will, initially, be focused in three eastern provinces namely Chachoengsao, Chonburi and Rayong. The EEC Policy committee is the primary Royal Thai Government collective force chaired by the Prime Minister of Thailand.

Minister urges universities to invest in upskilling of workers

The Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, Mr Suvit Maesincee has urged universities to focus more on the upskilling of the 35 million people strong workforce in Thailand. Due to Thailand's drastically lowered birth rate and technological disruptions, a large part of the Thai workforce is lagging behind and unable to live up to today's employer expectations.

Therefore, Mr Suvit stated that "universities of the future must become places for all ages. In a rapidly changing technological world, there will be no age limit for studying at universities as everyone will need to reskill themselves many times during their careers." To enable universities to adapt to these new requirements, and to focus on preparing students to become life-long learners rather than skilled workers, the Kingdom's government will ease some regulations that are seen as an obstacle to transforming universities.
