Steady labour market in China

Image

China has added almost 11 million new jobs to the labour market in the year to date. This is despite the ongoing trade war with the US and concerns about a slowdown in the economy. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, a total of 10.97 million new urban jobs were created during the period from January to September 2019.

China’s employment situation was stable despite an economic slowdown since overall the economy is still growing and each percentage point of growth meant more jobs than before, said Mao Shengyong, a spokesman for the statistics agency.

These figures come at the same time that the government released its overall GDP figure for the third quarter of 2019 of 6% growth, which is at the lower end of the government’s projections.

This growth in job creation is largely due the rapid growth of so-called 2nd and 3rd Tier cities in China, and growing affluent middle class and is being fueled by consumer spending. Other factors include the Chinese economy’s shift over the past decade from one reliant on manufacturing and exports to one where services and domestic consumption have gained importance as pillars of growth.

Despite this seemingly good news on the jobs front, there is cause for concern in some areas of the job market, most notably in the automotive sector, where there has been a significant slowdown, reflecting a global trend.

The automotive sector accounted for 10% of the Chinese economy in 2018 and is part of the cause for concern about China’s ongoing economic growth in 2020.

One area of optimism for the job market in China is the investment in 5G technology, which is predicted to lead to massive job creation in the market over the next few years.

Gemini Personnel - your visa partner in China

Image

When employing overseas employees in China or sending them to China for business, they will need to apply for a visa. The nature of the visit to China will determine what type of visa is needed, the types of documents and evidence needed to support the visa application, and also the length of time the employee will be permitted to remain in China on the visa.

The visa application can be a stressful and painful experience, with requirements and regulations being updated on a regular basis. It’s important to be 100% clear of what needs to be done to be granted a visa for China, and Gemini can support employees in this process.

Different types of visa
The first challenge when applying for a China visa is to know which visa is appropriate. There are many different types relating to the reason and intention of the visit. China visas as alphabetically listed as L, M, F, Z, X1, X2, S1, S2, Q1, Q2, C, J-1, J-2, G, D, and R. The most commonly used visas in China are L (Tourist visa), M (Business visa) and Z (Work visa).

L-Visa
This visa is issued to those who are planning to go to China for travel, sightseeing and tourist activities. Proof of travel such as flight confirmation and hotel reservation are required. Single-entry, double-entry or multiple-entry are all available for tourists. The duration of stay (each visit) normally is 30-60 days.

M-Visa
The M-Visa is issued to those who intend to go to China for commercial and trade activities. This can include visiting the company’s offices in China, client meetings and attending conferences and exhibitions. The duration of stay (each visit) normally is 30-60 days.

Z-Visa
The Z-Visa is issued to those who intend to work in China. A government-issued working permit or employment license is required. Z-visa is issued for single-entry only. Holders of Z-Visa shall, within 30 days from the date of entry, register and apply for the residence permit in Public Security Bureau (police station). The residence permit is good for multiple entries and is renewed every 12 months.

Documents needed for China visas
The list of documents needed depends on the type of visa required, and the requirements are often updated by the government, so it is essential to have the most up-to-date requirements. Some of the key documents needed for all visa types include:

• Passport with 2 empty pages and at least 6 months validity

(or 12 months if applying for a Z-visa)
 • 2 x passport photos
 • Visa application form
 • Invitation letter
 • Proof of return flights and accommodation reservation (for L- and M-visas)
 • Employment contract (for Z-Visa)
 • Medical certificate (for Z-Visa)
